Reading isn’t necessarily bad, it’s the fact that school ruins it. You have to memorize, and read terrible books.

Yeah, being forced to read , or do anything really, can really ruin any enjoyment you might have.

Honestly I'm really glad I was never forced to read any bad books at school and as a result I love reading. (We would also be aloud to watch the movie adaptation if it existed afterwards) so it checked out good, the only problem is that all my classmates would just look at me crying in the corner while the teachers where reading The Outsiders like 'dude wtf why you crying?' and silently judging me.

I had the same experience. I absolutely hated reading any assigned school book, especially in high school. Recently though I have been reading Japanese light novels based off some of the anime shows that I've already seen. It really helps me visualize where the characters are, what their doing, and even what they sound like.

Even as a book fanatic, once I got into AP Literature, I couldn’t stand to read books from school, BUT I read other books. Though eventually I lost my love of reading for a bit because I was depressed. Forced reading still sucks.
That being said, even in college I managed to read a 430 page book on my spare time (in like a few days) and currently working on a 600 page one outside of school so, at least my enjoyment is still intact and wasn’t crushed by school. ☺️
Though when people say they don’t enjoy music, that gets me because I’m one of those people who get frissons (aka goosebumps) from music super easily so to hear people say they don’t enjoy it is bonkers to me 😅

Once I had to read another goddamn book so I chose the shortest. It was about an old guy who married his neighbors daughet, but since they were 50 years from each other the girl got pregnant and the old dude wasn't the father. So the oldie got a cold and died. That's it... oh no, wait, it wasn't. Half of that 100 page book was remembering how fine some tree was in their home village and how no other tree in the world would be as pretty as that one was. Seriously. Then I had to explain what the book was about: "Old dude marries a young girl, thinks about a tree and then dies. The end."
Teacher didn't like that. I asked had she read the book and said yes. So I asked her was I wrong? "No that's the story, but you should have picked up the feeling that the writer was telling and how that pretty tree was more than a tree and...." I said stop. That book was about that tree with the young bride getting pregnant out of marriage. That's it and that's all that it was. She looked at me and said "well okay, if you think that". I said I do. And that was it. Horrible waste of time on everyone's part and now after 25+ years I still remember how angry I was for this utter shite she put me through.
And when I was going through native language skiipadoo while getting out of college, I got rejected on my native assignment. The paper said "Read this article and point out what the writer wanted to say". How the heck could anyone in their right mind figure that one out when it was all about how the writer didn't like a commercial? I picked out the things that he didn't like about it and got rejected. When I asked why and what for "you didn't understand what the writer ment"! So I asked what the writer ment then and got the answer "you did not understand that when the writer said he didn't like the McDonald's hamburger you said he didn't like it. But that's not what he ment. He ment something else and thus you failed". Fuck this shit.
On the second try I did get through when I used all of my imaginitation to write about anything else than about the subject. School is weird.

I for one have never been forced to read books when I was young and picked it up on my own. I actually hated reading when I was younger but when I finally picked it up, it quickly became a hobby of mine. Recently though due to school related reasons I was forced to read a few books but since I've already been reading for years, it doesn't really affect my love for reading. I feel that if I were forced to read at a younger age I would definitely have more resentment to the activity and would be in a similar position with Jaiden when it comes to reading.

Reading used to be my favorite thing and when I was in elementary and middle school I would die on the hill that reading was the best. I would literally read hundreds of novels. I don't really know what happened after that. I played my first videogame at like 14 which is super embarrassing and got addicted to INclips and twitch. Eventually in late middle school and early high school when I just started to hate the education system in general I just... Stopped. I went through an internet fanfiction phase during the pandemic but then never went back to reading actual books. Now I dread picking up any books for reports and use SparkNotes way too much. I literally bought a physical copy for my research paper and then had to buy it on Apple books because I couldn't bear to open it. Thanks for listening to my spontaneous Ted talk lol.

I feel the same way. I can still read, but it has to be an amazing book and I have to sit down to realize that. Otherwise I’ll just listen to the audio book. I recommend reading comics and Graphic Novels instead of books.
I was in the same boat as a kid. I hated reading and made it through AP English in High School without reading any of the books. I got really into Graphic Novels as I got older and it was a good gateway into reading for enjoyment.

I will always remember the moment we all had to take books to class to read. And i knew it needed to be something from a list of literature but i couldn't find it in the morning. So i took the book i was reading for fun (the origin of species by Charles Darwin) with me. And then the teacher asked what kind of thick book i was reading. I showed and she got almost mad at me. Her response was in such a way i stopped reading the book for 2 months. Than i asked if i could read another book for my book list. And same teacher again responded like she was very annoyed with me asking that.
Ye school definitely made me dislike anything literature related. I still like scientific books at least

I graduated last year, but when I was still on school the teachers hated that I would read. They'd take my books even if I was done with my work. The school librarian would get mad at me for checking the same books. I wouldn't even check out the same books repeatedly, I'd just go through all the books I liked and take turns taking them home. But apparently checking out a book more than 2 times meant that I was reading it too much.

Then it turns out the founder was turning the local residence into robots and then it turns out the founder of the town was the dad, who had a final battle with the family, then it ends with the dad fully going insane and becoming the shady founder persona.

I found it important to read some more serious books from primary to high school, especially in primary school. It helped broaden my horizons, empathise and realise the struggles of other people that I just couldn't know in a small country town. There where people of different races, struggles, cultures, and I got my first glimpse into what life might be like in those cultures from reading those books, even if they weren't that accurate. It was a start.
And for a place and time in my life where society placed the idea that "gay" just meant "bad", "[X area here]" meant "evil and uncaring", that "Caring" meant "weak" - that was important to me. And I think it can be a very necessary important thing here, too.
Reading comprehension and learning is important.

This reminds me of a Calvin and Hobbes comic, where Calvin had to write a short story for a class assignment... and he despised it.
"These assignments don't teach kids how to write. They teach them how to HATE to write." -Calvin
As an adult now, I can understand why. You can't force someone to enjoy something.
Granted, it's important to teach about metaphors, symbolism, etc. in writing, but don't expect a pre-teen to catch onto it too quickly.

Fun fact (though this is actually just a hypothesis of mine and I have done no research to see what other people think about it): Immersion is really the main thing that makes reading fun and having to do things like critically engage with the story or take notes can break that immersion, therefor the more academic (or such) you are trying to be while reading the less enjoyment you'll have. I really like reading mainly because I got into it before having to go to school so my reading habits don't default to critical slow immersion-less engagement.

Honestly, I get this. I personally love reading, but I have this same issue with writing. Because of my love of reading, years ago I developed a passion for writing. And then I went to college and was forced to write tons of reports about some of the dullest concepts I've ever researched. I'd spent night after night every week writing 20+ page reports that could and should have been condensed into one paragraph, but the arbitrary requirements of the classes would force us to extend the concept that far.
Ever since, I've been a terrible writer. I don't enjoy the process and it takes me literal months to write out just a few pages. It's something I hope to overcome one day.
All this to say, I think I can relate my experiences with this to the reason why you no longer enjoy reading. And in a similar vein, I hope that someday you find a passion for reading again. If you want to, anyway.

One strategy I came up with to enjoy reading is to sort of invision what is going on in the book if you will. It makes reading a lot more interesting even if there are no pictures to know what the setting is. There are context clues in the pages to know what the setting is, but that only takes you so far. It's better to just imagine the scenery from there.

Now i just hate it when I hear anything related to study, getting knowledge, learning and all that bs because of schools. Schools are Toxic and Harmful for one's personality, interests and creativity like i can write huge comments in utube comments section on a variety of topics but can't write some damn essay/letter which I have been trying to rote from years cause I just can't do those things in which I'm not interested at all!
I have almost stopped caring about useless marks and degrees now.
Ah man life sucks. Why did my parents give birth to me? Are they sadistic? Like do they enjoy thier child suffering in this tr@sh schooling system? Parents are selfish smh.

My parents made all the right decisions with reading, but they followed the 'force is right' method for every other subject. By my first attempt at college, I hated math so much doing the homework and studying to pass the single mandatory math class made me literally vomit.
Years later, after almost a decade's detox from public school, I tried college again. The new school I attended also had a mandatory math class, but they taught with a teach-to-mastery, minimal review method which was the complete opposite my prior experience. There was hardly any homework and for much of the term I actually ENJOYED myself.
Very, very slowly, I'm working to undo the damage to my education caused by School.

I had an assignment in my English class last year where we got to choose which book we read for the final assignment. That’s probably the most positive experience I’ve had with school-forced reading ever. (I read the hobbit btw, pretty good book, better than the hobbit movies but not better than LOTR)

Weirdly enough I completely relate to Agree with an understand what you’re saying Jaden despite the fact that I am an avid reader who loves books. There were quite a few times that I would voluntarily read really big books very quickly, but whatever I was forced to read something for school or because my parents wanted me to read it it just made me go through these really long periods where I would stop doing this hobby that I enjoyed Out of spite. Forcing you to do something even if you think it’s good for them usually backfires lol

I recall my traumatic experience "trying" to read "To Kill a Mockingbirb" and wanted to part with it asap. My attempt (that failed spectacularly) to "toss" the novel into my room onto my bed resulted in the paperback tumbling end over end and burying itself into my bedroom wall above my bed.
Needless to say I learned a few things, the film was easier to follow and my temper may need to get under control asap (it did).
This is a funny story in my family if anyone is concerned 😆

I love reading, but my mom also spent a lot of time reading to and with me when I was a kid. I don't think people understand how important it is for reading to be encouraged when you're little in order for it to be enjoyable. Your primary experience of reading shouldn't be when you're forced to do it. Instead of telling your kid to "read more" you can offer to read to them.

Mostly because I played tons of JRPG’s with no voice acting, and in fourth grade I was forced to read a book for an assignment in one whole day cause my parents found out about it and it was due the next day…I was going to just steal notes from the internet as I hated the book…. But anyways 500 pages and a migraine later I never wanted to read books again. Even ruined comics for me.

I love fantasy books, but I can't get through nonfiction or historical fiction or any of that. Maybe a funny romance or comedy novel.
I can blow through a 500 page fantasy book in 2 days if I don't have anything else to do. I read the Sparknotes summary for Fahrenheit 451 and was still bored and confused.
I love creative writing and I do it as a hobby. I can write essays but I will hate every second of it.

There’s actually an article called How Teachers Make Children Hate Reading by John Holt that basically describes the exact same thing you are. He says stuff about like how the way that schools force you to look up random words or references in books makes you hate reading. i mean when people actually read for fun they don’t look up every word they don’t know or look into the symbolism.
Anyways, all you need to get into reading is a book series that you really enjoy. and since you know people who can give you suggestions that makes it easier. you’re probably never gonna see this but it’s whatever

I do want to encourage everyone to give reading another try. Even during quarantine your local library likely has free audiobooks and ebooks for you to sort through and get directly on your phone/computer/tablet. You can browse vast selections and pick books that appeal to you. It's easy if you model it after the type of movies, shows, or video game stories you like most.
There's always a book for everyone, fiction or nonfiction. I hope you all give it another shot!

I used to love reading as a kid. If it was a subject I really enjoyed, like a certain anime or Star Wars, I would literally read pages and pages of web wikis. What killed reading for me was one book I had to read in AP English. Like Jaiden said, those school books that you had to read and forced to can kill the fun of it but I liked a majority of those books. Then came The Scarlet Letter. I literally fell asleep trying to read it. Since then I really haven't wanted to read a ton or read too many books, or wikis, since.

I used to love to read from the time I could read until my first year of college. I was an English major, so I read many books in each class, multiple classes per semester. I often didn't have the time to read full books and would just combine skimming with SparkNotes. Because I had to read so much for school, I didn't read for fun in my (rare) down time. After I graduated, I realized doing that for so long made me not enjoy reading anymore. I used to love it so much, but if I do read anything now, it's usually non-fiction and over the course of a few months.

I remember pretending to read Harry Potter for school cause we had to choose outside reading and then actually reading it and realizing "hey this is pretty fun!" Choosing your own books feels a lot different than reading the forced books from school that always seemed to involve the most depressing matter and require you to find the most obscure stuff to BS as symbolism. I wish I could remember which animator had a bit where they and a classmate or friend got to talk to the artist and ask about blue curtains or something and the writer responded, "No I just like blue." I feel like that's probably more apt to things than we realize XD
A lot of my reading these days is shorter admittedly than multi-chapter books, but I still count it as reading and enjoyment out of it be it game dialogue, fanfic, youtube comment, webpage, etc.

Reading is a chore for me, and like you, I'm pretty sure it was entirely because of schooling and parenting that I have come to despise it, because as a child I was a voracious reader. I don't think I touched a book for three years out of high school (aside from what college forced me to read, anyway). I have also found that most people who say they like reading actually don't read that much, they just like the "style" of being a bibliophile. I think it's because being into books is considered "smart," so people who want to be seen as smart and cultured pick up a bunch of books, pretend they can taste the difference between various teas, and talk endlessly about how introverted they are. A dead giveaway for a book scenester is that they won't go into any depth about any of their favorite books, especially if their favorite author happens to be one of like 3 that you see all the time on dating profiles (Looking at you, Kurt Vonnegut). They haven't interacted with the content in any meaningful way and are probably just pulling popular books down into a repeated list to fit in with the bibliophile crowd, or at least that is what I take from it because I like movies, animation, and video games, and if you get me talking about any of those 3 for any amount of time, you had better hope to God that you are genuinely interested or else I will bore you to tears with how long I can talk about my favorite/hated media and why I love or hate it. I've only met a handful of people who can do that with books, so I think the rest have just internalized this weird mentality that books are the most acceptable form of passing time and want to be seen as an intellectual.

She also had us do a project after each major play or book for that year (The Scarlet Letter, Cyrano, Macbeth, and Romeo and Juliet) and it wouldn't be just a writing project which was nice. She also had a comic option (she knew I and some other kids would love to make a comic), picking them music for the characters, fake Facebook posts that the characters would make, movie posters, news videos, designing what we thought the characters would look like based off of the descriptions of them, etc. And I enjoyed all the projects because she gave us a lot of options and drawing options that I always chose. Long story short my teacher was very good and I enjoyed having her as my English teacher.

Isn't it ironic then that most of the games played for the videogame animations don't have voice acting and require reading lots of text?

I use books to escape conversations with my friend that doesn’t know how to take into an account things I don’t enjoy. (He talks way to much about things I care very little about, and yes I do listen most of the time but still)

I didn't like most of the stuff I read in school, either, but I managed to keep it separate from the books I read for fun. Actually, I would have liked some of the school stuff a lot more if I wasn't also forced to try and analyze every sentence in the gosh darn book to death.
